My Own Sun

Pinup Girl Clothing Ella dress in pink and baton rouge floral print

The mind of a new(ish) mom is constantly filled with things we'd wished we had done before the baby.  While my list isn't too long anymore, learning my camera/photography is always one that stays with me.  I try to read blogs and tutorials when I can, but the fact is those moments are few and far between.  I usually wait for the "golden hour" to take my photos but it's not very convenient when Bianca is asleep or cranky at those times.  Lately I've been doing my best to take photos in different lighting conditions.  In a way, it's forcing me to learn through trial and error.  It's been an interesting journey so far and I'm hoping it helps with my photography in the future!

This pink Ella dress is truly a dream come true. As a longtime Jenny fan, I didn't think a different style could come close.  Ella is great because it's a little more comfortable in the bodice.  It's not boned so while there's less structure, it's a great dress to wear all day.  It has a full swing skirt and the fabric is considerably lighter than the Jenny.  But the biggest plus?  It has pockets!  Not tiny ones either, I'm pretty sure you could fit an iPad mini on each side.  I appreciate the generous pocket space when I'm at the grocery store and can take my phone, keys, and wallet while holding a baby!  Ella comes in a variety of colors and prints, I plan on adding another to my collection soon :).

  2. Too bad your photos always look incredible... :) and so do you in this dress!! This definitely makes me want to try the Ella, since I don't have one yet. My PUG wish list keeps growing and it's bad, bad news for my bank account.

    1. Gah, you're much too sweet. You know how it is, you always think your photos are the worst. I think you would look gorgeous in an Ella, much like everything else ♥

  4. I would never have guessed you were trying to improve your photography - it never looks anything less than immaculate! And the fact you take your photos in the so-called golden hour and the come out well is even more impressive - I call it the nightmare hour because it's like a race against time to get anything half decent!! This dress is incredibly beautiful and you look like you were born to wear it :) CC x

  5. I think your photography always looks great! You do a beautiful job capturing all the vibrant prints and colors you wear, and doing that while keeping an eye on a small child is so impressive.
This dress looks absolutely gorgeous on you. The pink is stunning with your coloring, and I love the unexpectedly perfect touch of the red shoes. You look like a valentine come to life.

  6. Gah, you always looks so gorgeous in pastels, especially with your lavender hair. The Ella is a beautiful dress, and PUG does such lovely sophisticated prints, especially the florals. I am loving all the functional details they have been highlighting in recent designs such as the adjustable straps and the pockets.

    1. Thank you Connie! I'm totally with you, the adjustable straps are such a great feature! As someone with a very long torso, being able to adjust where the waistline hits is a huge advantage!

  12. Such a lovely dress, as usual! Photography is a very weak point for me--but it's also something I don't find very interesting to study, so for now, I just go without the super-nice pictures. :)

  15. Why doesn't every dress come with pockets?!

This is a stunning dress on you, and some really lovely photos - you're so clever to take your own! I have a photographer, and even then my photos don't always turn out that great because I'm a bit of an awkward poser.

You're really inspirational to me that life - and love of pretty dresses - doesn't have to stop after motherhood

  17. One of the best ways to utilize light when it's not golden hour is looking for naturally filtered lighting spots, or having the sun at your back if you just can't find anywhere shady. I wrote a post about taking your own photos a while ago if you wanted to read it: http://www.eccentricowl.com/2014/08/26/6-tips-for-taking-good-outfit-photos-on-your-own/

Not that my photos are really amazing (it's always harder to produce fantastic pictures on your own!), but those are things that I have learned through being a photographer and having a husband who is an expert!

You look GORGEOUS here. And I like the lighting a lot!
