Makeup Review: Lime Crime Velvetine

It's been a while since I've done a makeup review!  To be honest, I was in a bit of a rut when it came to my makeup routine.  I decided to try something new: A very deep red/almost black lip color.  I usually stick to something light and pink but I love how something as simple as a lip color can dramatically change your look.  My initial reservations about such a deep color come from laziness.  I just don't want to have to keep applying the color, worrying about how it looks over time or it bleeding, and it transferring onto my coffee cup, husband, and baby.  I've done my research and Lime Crime Velvetines are my new favorite.

Lime Crime Wicked Velvetine

For the look I wanted, I decided to go with their Wicked shade.  Of course, before applying any color to my lips I always apply a primer.  My current favorite is Lip Insurance by Too Faced.  I'll also line my lips with a red pencil for a more finished application, but like I said, I'm lazy and didn't do it today.

Before
Lime Crime Wicked Velvetine

First off, this is the best smelling lip stain I own.  It smells like vanilla frosting.  I love it!  When I apply it I only use a small amount and start in the center and brush out.  Wicked is pretty potent with one coat, but I like to use two for an added dramatic effect.  Once the color dries it's on.  It survives lunch, coffee, and the billion kisses I gave Bianca everyday.  I've tried a vast amount of lip stains and Lime Crime surpasses them all.  By far.

The only down side to this product is the fact that it does have a drying effect.  I don't ever use a Velvetine on its own, so I didn't really notice this at first.  As long as your lips are already moisturized and primed, you won't have an issue with it drying.

Velvetines come in a bunch of cool shades (I also have it in Cashmere) and cost $20.  It's also available on Modcloth, which is great because there's always a coupon code floating around.

Have you tried Lime Crime's Velvetine line?  What's your favorites?  Let me know in the comments below!

  1. This shade is beautiful. My older sister is obsessed with Lime Crime. I haven't yet tried them, but this and your grey one are changing my mind!

  2. Man I've been wanting these for a while. I usually use MAC Diva for that color but reapplication is annoying. I'm only timid to buy it bc after I heard about the Lime Crime eye shadow drama I don't feel comfortable giving them my money. I'm hoping their lippies are different!

    1. I totally understand! But as a friend put it, if you buy it from Modcloth or Pinup Girl Clothing, you're technically giving THEM your money, haha! The drama is out there about Lime Crime but their product is truly superior.

  3. I have Wicked too, and I really like the shade! I noticed the dried feeling, especially since I didn't have any primer or anything on under it. I also usually neglect lip liner, mostly because I don't have any and I'm lazy. I also wouldn't be sure what color to get. I guess I usually tend to wear red. Anyway...I also noticed that it got a little messy when I put it on, but I could've just used too much, or maybe I needed liner or maybe it was a combo of both? Anyway...I really enjoy this lipstick and I really want it in Salem!

    1. I think any red liner would help from bleeding when you apply a liquid lipstick. Since Wicked is so dark it doesn't really need to match all that much. Ohhhh I totally want Salem too!

  4. Um, it survived the baby kissing?? Consider me signed, sealed and delivered!! I love my red lip, but the Mister hates that he can't kiss me with it on, and I keep forgetting and kissing the babies making them look like they've been coloring on themselves or having accidents. Well, they do that enough by themselves without me helping them along!

I really have to try a LC lip stain now, so thank you so much for doing this review. I found it very helpful. ❤

  5. Hi! New reader here! That color is gorgeous on you!! I've always wanted to try Lime Crime. I've only ever heard wonderful things about their lip stains. I currently use the Kat Von D liquid lip stains so I wonder how they compare. I've never tried a lip primer before so I'm definitely going to try that out! :)

    1. Welcome! I've tried Kat's lip stains as well. I can say hers are comparable, but I think Lime Crime outlasts hers. Lip primer is a must for me, I hope you find it helpful too :)

  6. After seeing your post on IG about Lime Crime, I was super excited for your blog post. Honestly, I've been following this line for YEARS when they first started off with loose pigments. I've heard so many mixed reviews about the products, which is why I've personally held off from buying myself.

Do you mind that the swatches online are true to colour?

  7. Wicked looks on you how Red Velvet looks on me! The dark shade really suits you - not so much on me!! By too pale for it perhaps. I do, however, LOVE Suedeberry and highly recommend it as a summery pinky-red. It's such a beautiful, unique shade :) x
