Madame Butterfly

Modcloth Eva Franco Thing A Ma Sprig dress 020

Here it is, another pretty blue dress.  I can't even explain why I'm so drawn to this color, but my closet is filled with hue after hue of blue (that's hard to say out loud!).  This is my first Eva Franco dress and I'm pleasantly surprised with the quality.  It's lined with really soft fabric and the dress itself is thick and sturdy.  I can see more of her dresses in my closet in the future...

I've been trying to figure out how to eliminate heat styling all together.  I've given up on the blow dryer and the straightening iron, but I can't quite give up on the curling iron.  I've tried putting my hair in sponge rollers but the curls are way too tight, even with the biggest ones.  Is there a way to use them without looking like a poodle?  If you have any suggestions, please send them my way!

I've officially started planning Bianca's first birthday party.  We've decided it's going to be just immediate family and a few friends.  Unlike my baby shower, we want something small but really thought out and cute.  I'm going to DIY a bunch of stuff, which means a lot because I don't really consider myself crafty.  I want to have a gorgeous dessert table and a super cool photo booth.  I haven't really thought about anything else!  I'm purposely staying away from Pinterest these days.  I can seriously lose a few days just pinning cute things I'll never actually do.  I'm sure I'm not the only one!

xoxo

  1. I can't believe Bianca is nearly a year old already! I feel like I was enjoying your maternity style only a few weeks ago. This dress is gorgeous, the fabric looks like it is really good quality and the print is adorable! Good luck with the no heat - I cut it out about a year ago but now that my hair is getting longer again I really miss it.

    1. Thank you so much! The dress is really great and well constructed. It's an investment piece but totally worth it! I can't wait to cut out the curling iron from my routine :).

  2. Firstly, that's such a cute dress! I love the sort of 'waffle' texture. As for heat styling, I am afraid that if I don't heat style, I get the poodle effect (or the 'Kate Bush' hair, as I affectionately call it!) as my hair is naturally wavy. When I curl my hair, I have to do it from dry - from wet makes the curls untameable and also about 24 hours to dry out.

    1. I'm surprised your hair has the "poodle effect", it always looks so perfect! It sounds like you have quite the hair routine yourself :).

  3. Gorgeous bright colours in that dress. I don't use any heat appliances either, I love pin-curling on wet hair...to get it relaxed looking, you'd need to either take bigger sections of hair and/or curl around more than one finger, for a looser curl.

    1. Thank you! I used 8 rollers last time, tonight I'm only doing five. Wish me luck!

  4. Such a gorgeous pattern with that dress. As for the curls- I've tried the headband tried and it has worked alright for me. http://www.kissandmakeup.tv/2012/07/how_to_do_headb.html

I haven't tried all of these but this has 6 ideas too: http://www.makeup.com/how-to-curl-hair-without-heat/

  5. What a beautiful dress. I love butterfly print and am often saying there should be more of it around, if I ever see butterfly print I buy it straight away. How exciting about Bianca's birthday, I can't believe it is one year, she sure is growing up.

    1. I feel like it's hard to find butterfly prints in adult clothing, don't you? I know, Bianca is getting way too big WAY too fast!

  6. I love this dress- the fabric print and texture make it look like it could be vintage. It must be so crazy that she's about to turn 1! I think a small family/friend affair sounds perfect because the future parties will be full of friends :) And I disagree on your craftiness- that flower crown you made was perfect!

    1. Yes, it totally gives me the vintage vibes too! I'm glad I gave off a craftiness vibe because that's seriously the only successful craft I've pulled on in forever LOL!

  7. This electric blue looks fab on you, I can see why you're adding it to your closet. It's just such a jolt next to your hair - the combo is really fun and playful.
I think the biggest thing with sponge rollers is to really brush your hair out. It takes longer than you think you should need to, but it's kind of magic when it goes from tight frizzy curls to pretty waves. A good boar bristle brush really helps.

    1. Thanks, Jessica! I'm going to take a little more time brushing it out tomorrow. I'm hoping all goes well :).

  8. Aw I'm sad I'm so far away and will miss Bianca's first birthday! If you want to cater desserts you should contact Rika…she did our wedding and she's so amazing and affordable! Also, what's wrong with looking like a poodle? ;)

  9. That dress is gorgeous! And I love that kitty mermaid pin too! Have you posted an outfit with a better shot of that sweater? It looks cute (I love a sequin sweater!) but I wish I could see more of it.
