I Want It All

pink ruffled dress 7

I've had this dress in my closet for four years and this is only the second time I've worn it.  It's not that it gets lost in a sea of dresses (although it actually did) but it just hasn't been out for alterations.  Honestly, I don't know what I'm waiting for because I feel like it's a few tweaks away from the perfect summer dress.  There's something about vintage clothing that makes it hard for me to alter.  I feel like I'm taking away from the original design and it brings on feelings of guilt.  I've said it a million times before, I have weird emotional attachments to clothing and I guess this is a perfect example of it.

I've been dying to take some photos away from my backyard.  Unfortunately, being alone with a baby makes that nearly impossible.  I got the most beautiful Bernie Dexter dress two weeks ago and I really want to take some pictures at a lake nearby.  Not only would I have to deal with the general anxiety of people stopping and staring, but I'd have to deal with Bianca in her stroller and hoping she would either be good or fall asleep.  Maybe the stars will align and that will happen?  We will see, but most likely I'll have to sneak away on the weekend to do it.  I wish I weren't so worried about what those nosy people would think...

Well, I've officially started the hunt for a part time job.  Being a stay at home mom is wonderful, but I miss my independence.  Mostly, my financial independence.  We are doing just fine on one income so I'm looking for something to occupy my time while Kevin is at home.  I've been especially picky about a job because, for the first time ever, I get to work for fun.  My dream job would probably be a wedding dress consultant (am I the only one?) so I'm looking into something of that nature.  Basically, I don't want to work in an operating room anymore, I want to have fun where I work, and I want to shop with my own money again!  Here's to hoping I can have it all!

xoxo

  1. Such a pretty, girly dress! And it looks great with pink hair, too!

  2. This dress is gorgeous! I have so many dresses that need altered, but I just never get there. You have me thinking that I probably should.

Taking pictures in public is only semi-awkward. I'm not sure what kind of landscapes you guys have in Cali, but whenever I have to take photos alone, I head for something very hidden and desolate. That way I feel more protected, my camera seems safer, and obviously for you, Bianca would be more safe. Maybe find something like that? Or wake up early on the weekend and have Kev watch her :) Obviously if I were there, I would take care of the problem for you! A girl can dream...

And I'm so happy you are looking for work that you will enjoy. My friend recently got into a bridal shop in Detroit and she loves it so much. It's not even her thing, really. But it's an independent store and she is having the time of her life so I'm sure you would to! I hope it works out for you and I'm sure getting a few hours outside of the house will be good for your mental health. My step-mom works at home (daycare) and she started off pretty normal and is now a full on psycho -- so we don't want that to happen to you. Not that it would, but you know.

  3. I feel the same way about vintage clothing. It actually stopped me from buying a vintage dress over the weekend, because the bust was a little too big and would have needed to be taken in, This dress really is beautiful on you, though, and it looks lovely with your hair!

  4. You look lovely in this - I love the hot pink and yellow! I've had a couple of dresses altered before, but I feel much the same way you do about the subject. And ahhh I know the Bernie you mean ;) I hope you find a way to take some photos there in it! But I hardly EVER take photos in public because I HATE how people stare and ask questions. I'm way too self-conscious in that respect. I've done it before when I've had to, but I love having the tranquility and privacy of doing it in my own backyard. Best of luck with the job search too!

  5. I LOVE how this dress looks with your hair! Amazing. That flower crown is definitely a nice touch too. It would be really cool to venture out in public for photos! I don't really have a backyard, so I don't have much of a choice. Sometimes it is annoying when people stare, but oh well! It's likely you won't cross paths with them again anyway. So I take it that you shoot all your own photos with a tripod? Do you use a remote or just self timer? I was doing them on my own for a while, but then it became much more convenient to just convince my boyfriend to take them! I should try to do it on my own again though so I can do them whenever I want.

I think it is great that you're looking for a fun job! Wedding dress consultant? Yes please! I can imagine that you may feel like you want and need to do something for yourself, and good for you for going for it! Also, extra shopping cash is definitely nice too :)

    1. Yep, I use a tripod and a remote. Before I invested in them I used my husband to take my photos. But honestly, it was such a pain to get him to do it and he doesn't have the same eye for photography as I do (not that I'm an expert!). I do love the freedom I feel from being able to take pictures whenever I want though :)

    2. You do a great job! I never see the remote in any of your photos. What's your trick?! Yeah, I'm sure it is definitely nice to have that freedom :)

  6. Great dress - love the ruffles! Looks like it's be super comfortable in hot weather too - not that the UK ever has any of that! I completely agree on the taking photos outside thing - people are so rude with the staring. I'm trying to get better at it but ultimately my shyness gets the better of me and I want to stop if someone walks past... I feel like if I crack the self-consciousness it'll be a huge boost to my confidence generally though, so maybe worth the effort... Good luck getting your shots by the lake! CC

  7. I love this. You were meant to wear that dress!

I'm still lacking the courage (and tripod) to take photos in public, so I know how you feel! Maybe some of those nosy people are thinking, "Wow, she must be one of those glamorous blogger ladies!"...?

Best of luck with your job search! It's great that you're holding out for something you'll really enjoy, and wedding dress consultant sounds like so much fun.

  8. I totally get wanting to be financially independent, Im currently going to school but I would love to get a job for that ability to buy things and what not. I know some people squirm at the idea of altering vintage but I think that if you have something and need to alter it by all means do it. Isn't it better that vintage piece has a home and gets used and loved! I don't know Im sentimental about clothes also and thats how I feel, kind of like they deserve new life. http://theredlipchronicles.blogspot.com

    1. I definitely agree with you. I want to make this dress fit my actual frame but I don't know why I have such a hard time pulling the trigger!

  9. I think it looks beautiful, no matter the alterations! I mean, what good is it to wear if it can't fit you? Anyway, I wish the best of luck to you in your photo taking adventures and your job endeavors!:)

  11. That's cool that you're looking for a fun part time job! I was about to say you could probably find some freelance stuff but it sounds like you'd like to get out of the house and I completely understand that! Good luck on your search though!

Also you look so incredibly cheerful and pretty in this pink dress. It's so bright! I love the yellow floral headband you paired with it. Gorgeous!

  12. Blimey that's proper 'shocking pink', so bright, I love it! I think I only have one pink dress and have only worn it once. Maybe I need more pink in my life! x

  14. I'm excited for your new job possibilities. It would be so nice for you to get to use your talent with fashion in your work.

I'm like you. I can't force myself to get out and take photos where people will see me. It just feels far too narcissistic for me. But I'll happily be a narcissist in my own backyard! LOL

That dress is so unique. Gorgeous styling too.

Wow, go you for wanting to claim your independence back, I am looking at you like you are slightly crazy though because I would love to be able to not work!

  18. This dress is a perfect summer dress! I usually end up with a pile of alterations that I make myself set aside a day to tackle. I've had that same dilemma over altering vintage but I finally decided that you are helping it living on in a style that's more fitting to you :) Your job hunt sounds like a good idea- I definitely miss the days of having fun, social jobs!
